has aboslutely nothing to do with it...

A service tag/serial number is a unique identifier which allows the manufacturers to be able to quickly distinguish when a laptop/desktop was made what it has inside it and usually customer details if they have registered.
All these ID's are imported into a database at the time they are built. This is then used by the phone operaters to see what sort of system you have and your details when you call..

is there anything more you would like to know...

Thanks a lot for such a prompt reply....
Well what i want to say is suppose my CEO's Laptop latitude 620 has lost & in that case if the IT department has not enabled the tracking feature i.e. service track number of laptop then what to do? Is Dell is able to find out the laptop if online?
Thanks in advance....
Regards
Rajesh
