I want the ability to mark a specific message for follow-up, set the day/date to perform that follow up, and have a notification, reminder or the specific message automatically appear in my email inbox, as if it were and unread message needing my attention. Thus far, I've not been able to do this using Create Task or Create Event, nor can I find the solution in Google Help/Forum/Discussion.

GMail doesn't offer anything like that at this time.  I haven't even seen something exactly like it through the Labs options/addons.  The Task one is the closest but I believe misses the email notification you asked for (and it seems you have already looked at it).

Let me know if you have a question or need more information.
