I have an HP F4200 series printer (white) with a USB interface. I have freshly uninstalled, downloaded and installed the drivers from HP for the printer. It see and adds the printer fine, but when I right click for properties I get an error message from explorer.exe and an instruction fault. I cannot print to the printer either.

The other printer on the system is fine.  Stand alone XP Pro machine.

Function address 0x500a0490 caused a protection fault. (exception code 0xc0000005)

This worked: oddly enough

1. Install HP Deskjet F4280 Basic Driver from Hp Homepage
2. Go to the Printer & Fax folder,
3. click "add new Printer"
4. choose "Local Printer"
5. Uncheck "Plug & Play"
6. click "next"
7. Choose "Lpt1"
8. click "next"
9. under "HP" choose "hp deskjet 990c"
10. click "next"
11. Go to the Printer & fax folder now you have to see "hp deskjet 990c" printer installed.
12. Choose Properties from "hp deskjet 990c"
13. Choose connections
14. Check "USB Virtual printer port...   HP Deskjet F4200 series"
15. click Okay.
I hope now you should be able to use your HP F4280 too...
