Hello,

I'm at my wits end with this problem, please someone help me!

Right, first of all my ipconfig /all

*** START ***

Windows IP Configuration

   Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : cbs-server
   Primary Dns Suffix  . . . . . . . : hq.commercebusinesssystems.co.uk
   Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
   IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
   WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
   DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : hq.commercebusinesssystems.co.uk
                                       commercebusinesssystems.co.uk
                                       co.uk

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
   Description . . . . . . . . . . . : NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller
   Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-1E-8C-33-47-EC
   DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
   IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254
   DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
                                       192.168.1.254
   Primary WINS Server . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

*** END ***

My problem is I want my sharepoint site to e-mail alerts to users.

Now I don't have exchange, so want to use a gmail account to send the emails.

I've read lots of tutorials on how to do this and think this bit is set up correctly.

I have SMTP service installed, and relay, and smart host etc all filled in.

Now when someone changes something on sharepoint, all I get is one of these delivered to my gmail account.....

*** START ***

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

      madeupemail@commercebusinesssystems.co.uk

Final-Recipient: rfc822;madeupemail@commercebusinesssystems.co.uk
Action: failed
Status: 5.0.0

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Blah blah

*** END ***

Now I know my e-mail domain is commercebusinesssystems.co.uk and my FQDN is hq.commercebusinesssystems.co.uk so could this be the problem?  Do I need some kind of MX record?

Please explain in detail if I do, because I don't know how!

Sorry for the long post!

Dave.

you don't have to have Exchange in order for sharepoint to send emails.

all you need is SMTP.  and you have that!

SMTP will send emails to email addresses.

or am i missing the point as to why you're trying to use gmail?

I don't have smtp - its hosted by 1and1 - if you can tell me how to get it to work with 1and1 then thats fine, but i've got further with gmail than 1and1.

The problem is as above - they immediatley bounce back with a failure notice so i'm stuck.

ok... another question then....

are you using a hosted sharepoint?  or do you have it installed on a server?
'cause if you have it installed on a server, then your server should also be configurable for SMTP.  windows server 2003 & 2008 have this ability...

i'm not going to be able to assist with your gmail question.  just trying to see if there's a simpler way to handle this.

Hi, I am hosting sharepoint myself - this is all sorted, but I do not own the domain name commercebusinesssystems.co.uk - this is hosted by 1and1 and is the web page and e-mail hosting.

I have installed the SMTP snap-in on the SBS2003 box.

Nevermind - i've sorted the problem eventually!

If anyone else gets the same problem....

The problem in the first place was that I couldn't use 1and1 as a smart host as it rejected my e-mails with some kind of spam filter (dynamic ip address).

Thats why I tried with gmail - but all emails returned with an NDR notification email instead.

I then dug out my ISP information and found we get our internet service from BT Business.

I placed their smtp address in the smart host box instead ( mail.btconnect.com ) and the e-mails flew straight out of sharepoint to the people intended!

So I can now sleep at night!
