camera lost data

i have a canon 5.1 MGPX and a kingston memory card. i turned on the camera and I should have 200 photos on it and it says I have 0 taken. The photos have been wiped and i didnt format the camera.

what free software can i try to recover it. I took 2 photos after this happened and they have appeared as normal and i have only 2 photos recorded.

You need a file recovery software solution to try and bring back the data from the card... you can try some of these: http://www.softwaregeek.com/program/flash_image_recovery/1.html

If the card has a physical failure, these may not be able to recover anything.

I download pc inspector and recovered some images about 30 jpg out of 200 which no program can open.

what settings do i use to look for files and how do i open these jpg's as this is not working. does this mean they are damaged?

I would say yes, if the files do not open even after they have been recovered, then the memory card most likely suffered a physical failure, and the data is gone.  Those utilities really only are able to recover data that was deleted by accident, not stuff that was lost due to failure.
