I need to get the java plugin version from IE6+.  My intention is to create an activex control using either C# of C++ that can be called from a webpage to read the IE plugin version.

Not exactly a solution, although if I were you I'd see about getting the java version using javascript (which can and has been done), rather than an activex plugin, I highly doubt that the people who have javascript disabled are likely to trust your activex plugin if they don't trust javascript. One method, would be to create some sort of java applet, and if it loads you can get the version that way - if it doesn't load then java is not installed (or possibly had errors loading the applet).

Hope this helps you somewhat...
