Missing emails when online in Outlook 2007 cached mode synchronization

I'm using Outlook 2007 with Exchange Server 2007. I'm setup to use cached mode. I have about 4GB of mail that would be synchronized to my OST, which is more than I want to store locally, so I have setup a synchronization filter. This is working fine, but my problem is that when I am connected on my LAN, and and working online, the mail I see is still being filtered and I can't see how I can view the mail that is still stored on the server. E.g. If my "read" folder has 10,000 items, and my synch filter restricts this to 2,000 - how do I access the remaining 8,000 when I am online/connected to exchange? It still only shows me the 2,000. The only way to view the rest is to remove the filter, which then starts downloading all the stuff I don't want into my OST.

My expectation was that when online I would be able to see everyhing (unfilted) and when offline my view would be restricted to the filtered items only. Maybe that's wrong?
