I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

The user manual can be found here. Apparently your model may contain an integrated modem. If this is the case, there won't be a card to remove.  (Page 128)

If your system does have a removeable modem you should be able to locate it on the side of the laptop.

Toshiba already sent me the Modem card.  I have since removed the keyboard but cannot access the likely modem location (next to line jack) from under the keyboard. I guess I will need to open the clamshell but do not wish to remove any screws except the necessary ones so that other components don't come apart. They won't give me driections for repalcing it and it took my contacting the head of Toshiba Sales in the US to even get the card sent to me. User manuals do not give directions for opening the case as Toshiba basically voids the warranty if you do that. If anyone has a link to a Service Manual for this model, that would help but I can't find them anywhere, even on the pay sites.

I agree. I've looked quite a bit for a manual and can't find anything definitive.
I'll keep looking though.

Dave, thanks anyway. After 4 hours and 40 minutes I have gotten to the modem and removed it. You cannot believe how difficult this was. Virtually the entire laptop has to be disassembled to get to where you can remove the modem screws.

Older laptops were not designed very well for replacement of defective parts. Being that it sounds like you have never taken a laptop apart before, 4 hours and 40 minutes is good time and the fact that you have it all back together and working is the biggest bounus!!!!

This is in fact a brand new laptop. I have worked on dozens of laptops down to the MB and believe me the location of the modem in this is absolutely ridiculous. You need to completely disassemble the clamshell including keyboard connectors and video  cables as well as several pieces of clear plastic that are glued in place. There are over 3 dozen screws to remove and some of them are hidden under drives etc that also need to be removed for access to the screws. You need to disconnect the LAN card and touchpad even though neither are anywhere near the modem. But you can't lift the case apart far enough if they are connected. It took another 50 minutes to put it back together to test the modem. Luckily replacing the defective modem was the only repair needed to restore the dial connection.  FYI Toshiba would have fixed this for free if I had been willing to mail it to Kentucky or drive it 600 miles round trip to an authorized service center. And they did send the modem at no charge even for Overnight Express.
