I have an exchange server, Exchange 2003 Standard SP2, and a gmail account.

I was hoping to migrate my mail from the exchange mailbox to the gmail account.

I set up the Get mail from other accounts successfully.

For the first few minutes mail transferred successfully.

But then it started failing with the error

Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 9:19 AM  Error: Server is temporarily unavailable.
Server returned error "Error in RETR command: The requested message is no longer available; it may ..."
Fri, Jul 10, 2009 at 9:17 AM  199 mails fetched.  9881 mails remaining.

Server returned error "Error in RETR command: Received an empty line"

The successes happen each time I click the "Edit Info" button then Save Changes without actually making any changes.

Then it goes back to failing.

I am wondering if there are any POP3 settings on the exchange server that could be optimized to help gmail's script succeed more consistently.

No, the GMAIL utility will download POP/IMAP emails in batches.  So if you have it downloading a 4GB Exchange mailbox, you're going to be there a LOOOOOONNNNNNNGGGG time.  But it'll do it eventually.

Alternatively, if you want to speed it up a little, at the cost of sitting there watching something mind-numbingly boring, you can go into the GMail interface Settings > Accounts and clicking "check mail now" every two minutes.

The problem was with specific emails.  It works to download 200 at a time.  It failed on specific emails, when I manually removed them from the exchange inbox the sync completed successfully.

They did not seem corrupted in any way, but whatever.  40 some emails out of 11000 is not so bad.

The check mail now button is not always available.  But clicking change settings then save starts an immediate check.

...  It did take some time to identify which emails were failing.  Mostly it is just trial and error and how dedicated you are to getting each and every email transferred.
