When I go to my website https://companyname.domain.com/exchange or https://companyname.domain.com/owa  my web browser is redirected to the internal dns name https://companyname.domain.local.

How do I change it so the re-directed is the correct public fqdn?

That would usually occur if you don't have the External URL set correctly on the OWA virtual directory in Exchange.

At the Management Shell, run the command
set-OWAVirtualDirectory -id "owa (Default Web Site)" -ExternalURL https://companyname.domain.com/owa

Restart the IIS Services and retest.
