If the majority of the users are on Mac you can always use Open Directory....what other systems are in use? It's easy to use Active Directory to manage the logins and Open Directory to manage the mac computer accounts in a mixed environment. Still giving you your single sign on.

The only thing you need to be careful of when setting up Open Directory and Active Directory is using a .local extension for the internal domain name. Rendezvous uses this namespace and will have to be disabled before the Macs will join OD or AD if you use it.
