open-source evernote alternative

I love Evernote because it allows me to save files without the need to upload and download.  Once a file is there, it's as easy as it can be.

What I don't like about evernote is that:
1. It requires payment and is not open-source.
2. It won't search for keywords "inside the document"
3. Initial document creation such as Excel still must be done in the traditional sense and the file then 'moved' to Evernote once it is created.

I have a shared hosting at hostgator with shell access but no ability to reboot.  Is there anything open-source, that I can can use like Evernote.  Being able to 'directly' edit a file without upload/download is imperative.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Hi rtod2,

Google Docs works more or less the same way and is free.

Google Docs doesn't house other types of files and must convert even MS documents into it's own format.

I'm not finding a whole bunch of OS alternatives.  There may not be one.

rtod2,

If you prefer Alfresco, you should have posted that and accepted your own answer instead of whacking me with a C grade...

The only problem with accepting my own solution is that it stays in my que for days.  My intent yesterday was to clean-up my que.

That's not a good reason to hand out an C grade, especially since I have been around and was still willing to help.  I'll ask a Moderator to reopen and start the closing process.

Works for me.  Sorry Jason.   Sometimes it's difficult to work the close process and make everyone happy.

I don't want it to remain open when trying to 'clean things up'.  That is the worst time to see it there.  I think it would help if you guys could figure out a way to consolidate the items for which close has been requested into a button that says " x items pending close".  Then I wouldn't have to see them and would be more likely to accept my own answer instead of assigning a c grade.

Not exactly what I was looking for.  Alfresco would be a good alternative.
