'wireless won't connect windows is unable to connect to the selected network. the network may no longer be in range'

HP pavilion ze5475us won't connect to a new wireless router. router is a gt724-wg from local phone company (tds). It will only do wpa-psk security. My other laptop works just fine.

this one will either not see the wireless using windows zero config or if I see it and try to connect it will give the error: windows is unable to connect to the selected network. the network may no longer be in range

I've updated the drivers hoping to gain wpa support. That's my guess. Also played with open and shared authentication.

windows xp home 32bit w/sp3 installed

internal nic shows up in device manager as lan-express IEEE 802.11 PCI adapter.

Any thoughts?

have you checked the firm-ware for the router?

with my experience ... updating the firm-ware works for me
Brand new router with the latest firmware... The phone company tech did that trying to troubleshoot although I can't seem to get a firmware number from the router just an option to upgrade.

I'm suspecting that the laptop in question does not have any driver available with wpa support. (It's gotta be 8 years old).

ok tracked down firmware info. There is no firmware available through the link provided in the router which points to tds.

I just searched actiontecs support for a firmware upgrade. Nothing exists. just a usb driver update... Appears the firmware is what it is.

I suspect that's it. Can't find a driver update that will support wpa anywhere.
shouldn't cost you much for a USB wifi dongle --

and your headache will be gone...
