DNS Server

Can I ask a real novice question.

What, in simple terms, is the role of a dns server in relation to a companies website.

We have a website than is hosted on an IIS server, but I am new to the term DNS Server?

Is the DNS Server, just another word for the IIS Server, or does it server a totally different purpose.

Excuse my ignorance.

Its a completely different thing.

a DNS server is one that takes a human readable name (like www.microsoft.com) and gives an IP address. The IP address is then used at the network level to connect you to the webserver.

A dns server will serve different sorts of records, depending on what is asked for - so a query for an A record (address, usually used for webservers  etc) will give a different answer than a query for a mail destination (MX), even if both ask for the same domain (microsoft.com)

normally, you will have a webserver where you can keep an eye on it (paid hosting or your own site) but often will have an external provider (often your isp) handle dns for you.
