Need to add a row number to a Crystal Cross tab report

I have a cross tab report that has many rows of data.  I was asked to add a column with the row number to the report.   I assumed that would be a simple item, but I cannot find it anywhere.  I tried to use the special field RECORD NUMBER, but that does not start an 1 and increment by one, which is all I need.

The running total field did not work either as i receive the error "A print formula that modifies variables is used in a chart or map"

How can I get a simple row number that just increments by one to show on the cross tab?

Which version of Crystal?

I don't think you can get what you want.
Since a crosstab generally shows a summary value in the rows, are you showing a single record in each row?

V10.  I am showing a summary only.   Is there a way to add a variable that counts the summary rows and spits them out?

CR2008 added the capability to add columns like that to a cross tab.  Until that version I think you are out of luck.
