I am trying to upgrade my IOS to (c2801-advipservicesk9-mz. 124-25a.bi n) from (c2800nm-ipbase-mz.124-15. t7.bin) through my tftp server... i just got the connectivity for my tftp server but when I try to copy tftp flash i am recieving a warning [ File not a valid executable for this system]
Can anyone tell me if this file is valid for the upgrading the above mentioned IOS..
Ohh and i almost forgot to mention when i copy this file to my laptop and put it onto the tftp server it shows to be a VLC media player file although its an IOS image ...
and when I try to back up my existing IOS (c2800nm-ipbase-mz.124-15. t7.bin) it give the error opening flash ... file not found ..
i donot understand if the file is not found in the flash how is the router running right now what the problem??

"File not a valid executable for this system"
it wont work on that system! it may be the wrong boot flash version, some time you need a upgraded boot flash to run newer images. or other wise that image is not made for that system.
however you are getting the error when you try to copy the file, suggesting that it is the copy not working not the running of the bin file on the router
try a
#copy flash tftp
then folow he mini wizard through filling in the ip address and the file name (no need to put flash:xxxxxx jsut the full file name, I suggest you copy and past)

you are using a wrong IOS image
you need to get IOS compatible with 2811 not 2801
something like the following:

Memo,
that may well be correct, but you should still be able to copy over a file. even if it is not compatable. so there is anotehr issue here.
the archive command for copying tar images on switchs do check and will not copy over an incompatable image. but not bin images...
try a
#sh file systems
on my 4506 you see the following.
as you can see the flash has a different name meaning you need to do a copy bootflash: tftp

Ok as suggested you do not have the correct image so even if you can copy it it will not work.
you need the 2811 versions of the ios, not the 2801.. taht is for the 2801.

yes Memo I know, that is what I started my post with "as suggested" when i was refering to your eairlier post.
but that stilll does not resolve the issue why he could not copy to flash, or was getting a file not found message.
If there is a problem with the file system on the router to begin with as well then its better to resolve the issues one at a time, rather than doing every thing in one go and never knowing what part is the issue.

hi
yes it's compatable...but if its size 57M then,,as sh flash results,,you have a 33M empty,, so you need to delete the old IOS
and get the new one...
and do the following if you download it to the flash directly:
boot-start-marker
boot system flash:c2800nm-adventerpris ek9_ivs-mz .124-24.T1 .bin
boot system flash
Try and reply

Just a word of warning.. dont powercycle the router between deleting the old IOS, and copying the new one across. if you do you will end up with a non booting router, and have to go through a tedious process to sort it out.
Also make sure to copy the current IOS to a back up before you delete it!

when you boot a cisco router it copies the ios from flash in to its dram memory. it then never again looks at the bin file saved in flash while it is running.
so if you erase the flash memory the router will still carry on running as though nothing has changed.
this is good for two resons.
beacause the router only write/ reads from the flash when directed by a user, ie at reloads or copy run start commands. and powercut is unlickley to happen during this. so it is very hard to croupte the flash memory, and if the router crashes rebooting it will bring it back to an idential setting to when the config was last saved. much more stable than say windows that is constently writing to the hard drive and updating its config but by bit.
secondly it allows you to do the above. you can delete the old image. copy over the new one, and cahnge the boot config during the day. then run a relaod command to secdual it over night out of hours. you can also do this with a start up config. making lots of changes on a test router. then copy over the new start up config to the live system. but again unless you reboot the router the config wont take affect. this means lots of changes can be made to a router while it is up and running, and you can get them all to take place in one go out of hours.
Now if you do relaod after you have erased the flash, the router will first serch for an image in flash.. and once it cant find one will boot in to romm (in fact that is back to front a router allways boots in to rom. and then checks the boot system config and boots the image.
if the image is not there then its a realllllllllll pain to sort out. if you copy the new ios over while the system is still running then you avoid the heart ach.
as for sorting out the boot system:
i do a
#no boot system
as this clears it and then set uit up again,
aslo I have found out on some systems that the show bootsystem does not update fully unless you do a copy run start first.

if you ever do have a router that wont boot past the ROMM. ie has a croupted IOS on it or none at all.
there following document will help you get it back up and running.

I am going to update it soon so it will down load the IOS from a tftp server which is much quicker, however this will get you out of a pinch if you need it.
