libfreetype error

On Fedora 8 i tried to compile libfreetype and installed  in /usr overwriting existing freetype library , after reboot all the fonts are disappeared and  unable to view any text on login

how to restore back

On a GNU/Linux distribution that uses its own package management tools it is ill advisable to install tarballs unless you know what you are doing and keep track of things.

That said, if you compiled and installed libfreetype from a source tarball instead of  installing a rpm package, then the RPM database will be able to show what files do not belong to a known package ( find /usr -not -type d -print0 | xargs -0 -iX rpm -qf 'X' --qf="%{NAME}\n" | awk '/owned/ {print $2}' ). With that information you can remove files that are not part of an existing package (be careful). Afterwards verify the integrity of installed packages ( rpm  -Vva --nodeps --noscripts ). Look up the result of the check in "man rpm" under "VERIFY OPTIONS" and reinstall problematic ones accordingly.
