Javascript focus in tabbed browsing

Hi everybody,
I have a fancy Javascript web application that has a parent window and child window referencing elements on each other.  When I click a button on the child popup window, I want it to minimize and shift the focus to the parent window.  I use window.opener.focus() which does the job, except when my parent window is in a browser tab and I have more than one tab open, even if the parent tab is active.  Is there a way to get focus to the parent's tab and window?
Thanks
