Paypal process flow

Hi,

A. I am planning to develop a website that allows users to register themselves, and receive a log in and pass word in case they want to update their account.

B. After registration, a user can buy either 6 or a yearly service provided by this website.

I need to find out exactly about part B. I am not sure what the process flow should be. The client wants to use "Paypal standard", which I hope that is fine. The client has alrady openned a business account with paypal.

I know the following:
- Place a paypal button on a page.
- When they click, they go to paypal page and pay over there. (I am told that paypal provides a line of code to get this part done)

What I need to know is that:
- how do I know, as a developer (I know client receives a confirmation email), that transaction has taken place so that I can update database regarding their payment, time of payment, etc and hence give them full access to website services.

if you think the above process flow is not practical could you advise the alternative please?

Many thanks in advance

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.
