my exchange conked out. event viewer shows error starting some information store. logfile missing starting information group, initialization of jet failed, current log file missing
There are also ESE errors for corrupted files.
Can this be fixed by running a repair? This exchange server has been running for around 4 years without a problem and just around 5 or so users

If you have a full online backup then you can restore your database and then get all you data else you can go for repair option...Check this

I just realized that for some reason my bkupexec.exe is gone! nowhere to be found. btw, when I rebooted the server earlier after noticing the problem, it went through a major chkdsk procedure (windows 2003 server). Do i have to reinstall backupexec and restore or should i run eseutil instead?
Well Restore is the safest and should opt 1st option always as repair has chances of loosing data from 0 to 100 %. So go for restore option first :)
