Hi,

I just finished initializing a 6 x 300Gb SAS disk (rpm 15.000) raid 5 array with a 128KB stripe size

Now it's time to create a volume in windows.
I was asked what ntfs cluster size I wanted to use, Default or a selecting of several others. Default used a 4KB one but now I'm wondering if this cluster size should or should not be bigger, or equal to the array stripe size.

Could Anyone  help me out with this question?

Thank you

Setting cluster size depends on what the size of the files you will be using,
Since this looks to be an email server, I would leave it at 4K, to minimize wasting disk space.

If you were doing mostly large files (like video), you could probably go larger without any problem. I wouldn't go more than 32K without running benchmarks and diags to see what it's doing.

Hi,

For exchange 2007, a big size cluster is good, because its database size  is very big, but I'm wondering if this cluster size should or should not be bigger, or equal to the array stripe size.

I wouldn't.
I would keep it at or below 32, without spending some time testing the larger sizes for performance and possible issues.
But you will probably not see that much difference.

Thank you ...
Ok, What about the array stripe size ? 128 ? 256 ?

Commented:
For large files, either one should be OK.
It's been awhile, but I seem to remember that the 128 stripe makes it easier to rebuild a replacement drive, but I am not going to swear to it.

Thank you much.   : )

I couldn't find my notes to check on that stripe question, but I did find this link in my bookmarks.
