arcserve 11 restore by session

Hi all,
I installed the same version arcserve on a 2nd server at a branch office site.  I backed up data on the first server at head office to tape. Then I took the tape to the 2nd server in the branch office. However when I try to restore by session, the sessions cannot be selected, so I cannot select which files I want to restore. I can restore by backup media option successfully, but this does not let me know what files are on the backup. The restore by session option works fine if I try that on the first server. Why can't I restore by session on the second server for the same tape ?

hi anarine,

for you to be able to restore by session you need to use the merge utility to merge the session information which will merge the catalog information into the database which will then show you what data is in each session and you can then restore what ever data you want to.

when you select restore by backup media it basically reads the catalog information on the tape and restores the data.

default is to merge all sessions or you can merge a specific session.

I read the above article, and I beleive the arcserve db may not have been backed up to tape.
Will this be a problem ?

No.

The ARCserve database will be backed up if the volume ARCserve is installed on is backed up or if it is selected as an option during any backup. It is handy when setting up a new ARCserve server or a recovery site.

However any tape and session can always be merged as detailed above.

What does the arcserve database contain exactly ?
historical data on data backed up, jobs, backup devices, & tapes.

I ran a merge job on a particular tape, but it is taking a very long time and seems to be checking every single file on the tape. Is this normal ?
I think so. I have not worked with 11.1 in some years now. If memory serves correct it was in 11.5 that the database catalog file was introduced.

The catalog file is created during the backup, then merged into the database, and for a Merge operation it is restored from tape and then merged. This makes a merge operation rather quick.

Without it, the merge will as you observed starts at the beginning of the session and reads sequentially through the whole session. Which is a good reason to merge only the session you need to restore from. A restore can always be done without via Restore By Backup Media, in which case you enter a filter for the specific file or directory needed.

Version 11 was introduced over 5 years ago and a lot has changed since then.

I am not seeing the option for backing up the arcserve database in the backup job.
Where is this arcserve database located ?

In the current version it is under Global Options at the Operation tab.

Is there a way to encrypt arcserve backups ?
I was going to say since you new question is unrelated it should be addressed by opening a new question, but since the original question was only for 50 points which were never awarded it seems there is little point.
