currently my DNS server has exchange.myserver.com set to the internal IP of the exchange server.  so if you do a ping from the exchange server to exchange.myserver.com you get 192.168.1.106

Ensure that you have the DNS servers in the network configuration set to use the domain controllers ONLY. No external DNS servers should be set on any network card anywhere in the network. If you need to use external DNS servers for DNS resolution to work on the internet, then configure forwarders on the domain controllers in the DNS server applet.
