Domain Controller takes a long time to ping/resolve

I have a client running a Windows-centric network, with:  1 - Server 2003 Standard (AD/DC), 1 - Server 2003 Standard (Exchange).  The clients and Exchange server have no problem at all pinging internally or externally.  The DC can ping and resolve, it just takes a really long time...example:  When I type 'ping', the client machines will respond immediately - but the DC takes up to 20 seconds to respond with the first ping result.  Any ideas?

I am assuming that your DC also acts as a DNS Server -
1. Can you please make sure that in the TCP/IP settings of the Newtork card of the Server you only have the Server itself listed in the Primary DNS Field. You shouldn't have any other external DNS Servers listed as a Rule of Thumb.

2. Can you open up DNS console from Administrative Tools. Right Click on "SERVER NAME" and go to properties. Now go to DNS Forwarders TAB and make sure that you have a few DNS Servers listed there and not just one. Also make sure that the TOP DNS Server is the one recommended by your ISP or the one closest to you.
