BackupExec 11d "Device In Use"
I can't run any backups as the tape device is always in use. I am using a Overland Storage Library. I have gone into the webadmin of the Overland and removed the tape from the drive. Right now it is currently empty but BackupExec still reports it as "device in use". This is not a new setup. It has been running since 09/2007. No updates have been done to the server recently. Any suggestions? I am able to move tapes around in the library, in and out of the tape drive, i can run cleaning tape from the device's webadmin page. I really think it is an issue with BackupExec but I can't figure it out. I have stopped the BackupExec and SQL services many times with no luck. I have rebooted both the server and the Overland many times as well. Please help as this is our only backup device for our organization. thanks.
Sorry if this is a bit vague, but have you spoken to backupexec support? I had a problem like that once and i had to obtain a patch to sort it out. It a few years ago now - bit hazy on the details :-P

unfortunately, i do not have support with symantec so that is not an option.
It will also say In use if there's currently a backup job running. So for instance, if there's a job running and it was waiting for overwritable media...
It is highly recommended that you renew support w/Symantec, which will enable you to updates for BE which has always been buggy and needs upgrade as you move to newer OS's, even service packs.

there are currently no jobs running. if it was up to me, i would purchase symantec support. unfortunately, it isn't.
Does this happen a lot? If not, have you restarted the server? :) (or BE services)

it only started happening last week. it has been running fine for almost 2 years. i have restarted the server, services, tape device many times. it's as if it has a lock on it.
