SQLExpress 2005 fix master db

arthrex used Ask the Experts™
Hi experts,

I have a problem with one of my sql server express installations. The service doesn't run and gives me the error:
An error occurred while processing the log for database 'master'.  If possible, restore from backup. If a backup is not available, it might be necessary to rebuild the log.

I found this site here, which explains how to fix the master db:

But I don't get the second part of the command
start /wait <CD or DVD Drive>\setup.exe /qn INSTANCENAME=SQLExpress REINSTALL=SQL_Engine REBUILDDATABASE=1 SAPWD=<NewStrongPassword> REINSTALLMODE=vomu

1.) Why do I have to use the cd or dvd drive when I extracted the files to my hard drive?
2.) My computer (XP) doesn't understand the command "start /wait"

Can someone help?

you have to give full path of setup.exe from your hard drive. like:

START C:\abc\sqlExpress\setup.exe /qn and remaining stuff in command line
you must have START command. can you try following command in your DOS?

If Start command is there in your OS, you will see it's help.

hmm...now the start command does work.

but now I get the message:
/qn is not valid

can you try command without /qn?

I got it working.
Problem was that I was using quotation marks for the paths.
glad to know that your problem is resolved. cheers
