Move Symantec Mail Security to new server

Hi...looking for suggestions on the best way to migrate Symantec Mail Security for Exchange from an existing Exchange 2003 server to new Exchange 2007 SP1 install. We will be retiring the 2003 box and would like to transfer the existing license to the new server. Current version is 6.0.7.253 which I've read supports E2K7 SP1 and I can see in the console that I can install the software onto another server but I'm wondering if the existing E2K3 installation would remain as the master server in the Mail Security software and then cause problems when I uninstall it. Not sure there is a master, just would like to know from someone with experience.

Thanks!

I have never had to install it on more than one server but do not ever recall there being a Manager / Member option at all, so as far as I am aware, just go ahead and install the software on the Exchange 2007 server.
If you click on the Download Latest Update from the initial console screen, you can download the newest version, which I believe is 6.0.8.262

Thanks for the info. Do you know if you can transfer the license file or would I need to contact Symantec to get another one?
The license is not for a particular machine - it is easily transferrable.  As long as you have the right number of licenses for the number of machines you are using, then you won't be in breach of the license agreement.
If you prefer to check (just to be on the safe side) - please call them on:
United States & Canada Telephone:

So then does updating to the latest version then installing to the E2K7 box from within the Console on Exchange 2003 sound like the best route? Or should I install it from standalone installation file? I'm not sure if there is any customization done on the existing install so would like it transferred over.

Thanks again.

Hi,

There should be an option to export settings from Mail Security so that you do not need to manualy mirror all of them...

best regards,
Vladimir
You are right Vladimir - I have never had to do this, but you can click on File, Export - exports to an XML file, then on the new box click File, Import, point to the exported XML file.
Off you go.
Probably worthwhile upgrading the existing server to the same version to make sure the settings match, although I doubt there will be much new in the latest version as the revisions are not massively different.
Just the info I was looking for. Thank you!
