try to change
call_id

into:

cast(call_id as varchar(20))
what angelIII is saying is that your trying to compare a string field to an integer field.  so his solution should do the trick.

Commented:
since your data type is numeric ther should be no space between the quotation marks ' check that...

Thanks to all for the replies.  Please bear with me as I have no SQL experience.

I cannot change call_id.  Or, to put it another way, I have no experience manually typing expressions via the SQL Pane - I am only familiar with the Grid Pane and the call_id column is the one I need to work with.   Is there a way to do what angellll suggests by working with the Grid Pane only?

I also checked and there are no spaces between the quotation marks.

only the expression, not the column definition.

in plain sql, it would be

WHERE cast(call_id as varchar(20)) LIKE '234%'
