I am in the middle of transitioning from Exchange 2003 SP2 (on Server 2003) to Exchange 2007 (on Server 2008) at the office.  We have approximately 20 mailboxes, and Im almost finished moving them all.  However, I have 2 mailboxes that just will not move.  I get the following error:

Error:
Error was found for Joe Smith (jsmith@domain.com) because: Error occurred in the step: Moving messages. Failed to copy messages to the destination mailbox store with error: An unknown error has occurred., error code: -1056749164

Elapsed Time: 00:12:47

And in the event log, I get these errors:

So Ive done some research, both here and on line.  Unfortunately, KB839217 doesnt apply here, as our organization never used Exchange 5.5.  Ive also checked the inherit permissions on the mail store.  No problems there.  Ive dismounted the mail store and run ISINTEG, only finding 4 issues to be repaired.  However, that hasnt fixed the issue either.

Were running a mix of Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007.

I really dont want to have to export the mail into a PST file and recreate the users, so Im looking for any other things to try.  Im stuck.

Thanks!

Have you tried moving them more then once?

In some of my moves, I would get this error frequently, some of them took 4 or 5 times before they finally moved.

Unfortunately, yes.  I've attempted it multiple times.  I had really hoped ISINTEG would fix the inconsistencies causing the issue, but even after running that, no joy.

I haven't seen any instances where folks have run ESEUTIL.  I'm wondering if that might be warrented here even though I haven't seen any examples of folks running it...

In the move mailbox wizard, put a value like 10 for the number of corrupted messages it can skip as part of the operation.

If that doesn't work, export the contents to a pst, delete the mailbox (not user) and create a new mailbox in 2007 server and import the pst back.

My apologies for not providing that information.  I set the corrupt messages limit to 100, as these mailboxes are years and years old.  Some of the other mailboxes had problems with corrupt messages, and using that setting was how I was able to move them.

I am really trying to avoid having to delete the mailboxes (sorry, I jus realized I put users above) if I don't have to.

If increasing the corrupt messages to be skipped doesn't solve your issue, then you will have to archive to pst and import it back.

Thanks everyone.

After doing more research and messing around a bit more, I've decided to have the users who are experiencing this issue export their mailboxes to PSTs.  I am going to attempt to move the empty mailboxes in order to preserve some of the other settings that won't get exported.
