AD replication question

Hi

We are running Windows 2003 DC's. Forest/domain functional level is Windows 2003 Native.

In AD Sites and Services, under Inter-Site Transports, I can see links such as :

Canada-Japan
Canada-France
UK-Germany

etc.

I was wondering..is AD replication always 2-ways with AD 2003? So Canada-Japan effectively means Japan-Canada too?

If I wanted to force replication, just between two sites, how would I do this?

Domain Controllers in the same domain are multi-master and no matter which DC the changes are made on the changes will be replicated to all DCs in that domain.

If you have different domains, then changes to the domain partition of AD are replicated to all DCs in the same domain, changes to the forest partition of AD are replicated to all DCs in the forest.

To force replication, go to AD Sites and services, expand the sites folder then expand the site that you want.
Expand the servers folder and then expand the NTDS setting folder. To the right you should see the servers to which that server replicates. Click the connectionin  the right pane and click Replicate Now.

Under each Site there would be a bridge head Server configured for handling Site Replication using IP or SMTP Links.

Thanks, I am still a little confused by Force Replication.

Let's say I go to a site named Canada in AD Sites and Services.

Canada > CanadaDC1 > NTDS Settings

In there I have three servers listed:

CanadaDC2
JapanDC1
UKDC1

If I click on JapanDC1, does this mean replication is forced *from* CanadaDC1 to JapanDC1, or *from* JapanDC1 to CanadaDC1?

Hello,

In your example, replication would be forced from JapanDC1 to CanadaDC1

Thanks...

As regards the CanadaDC2 in that list, there is no need for it there? I thought AD replication between DC's in the same site was immediate?
It is needed. Even though replication is basically immediate, there still needs to be connectors between servers in the same site. Generally speaking, you should not be manually creating or deleting connectors. You should allow the KCC to automatically create your connectors unless you have a specifc reason to need manually created connectors.

Hi JJ

Got it..so just in reference to that intrasite connector (between CanadaDC1 and CanadaDC2) - there would really not be a reason to do 'forced replication' between these two, since they replicate almost immediately (is it 5 mins?) anyway?
Correct. I would not bother forcing intrasite replication unless you are trying to troubleshoot a replication problem.
