How do I change the default location for Windows Updates on WSUS Client PCs?

We have a few hundred PC's which will have Deep Freeze shortly.  One of the features of DF is that it allows for maintenance times to download OS patches and AV updates.

I'd like for the machines to pull from WSUS, like everyone else.  The only thing is i don't want 300 machines at a time hitting the wsus server, for all the same updates.

I can have them scheduled to poll at different intervals, but what I'd really like is to have the Windows Updates downloaded to a "thawed" directory, so we can use BITS to get what's needed over time, and not lose what's downloaded after a restart.

All my googling has resulted in others asking the same question.  Am I missing an easier way of doing this?

You cannot change the location but you can replace the SoftwareDistribution folder with a Junction Point to a folder on another drive.

I found that thread as well:  http://forums.techarena.in/server-update-service/820083.htm

I had hoped this had changed, or a workaround had been found since this 9/2007

Yep.  It doesn't really address my question.

I have no doubts that I can point the DeepFreeze'd machines at WSUS, I just don't want them all to download from it at once... I don't want to have to wait for the updates to download, and i don't want to 'waste' the bandwidth to download them only to have them  lose it upon reboot.  If i could move the directory that the client downloads its updates to, i'd point it at a 'thawed' directory so they aren't lost.

Unless I'm misreading something, the client requests the update mechanism to re-initiate the download if there's a restart.

Well there is no documented way to move the distribution folder,  you cant even with environment variables. From as much as I read from the document it looks like they covered all scenarios. Did you scroll down to appendix C? Anything downloaded to the distribution folder during thaw state will remain in this folder as well.

this is a pretty cruddy way to handle things Microsoft!

dstewartjr, thanks for your time.  It looks like i'll be doing clever things with an offline updater tool.
