Laptop is locking or freezing up.

Hi,

I have a laptop which somewhat frequently locks or freezes up. What happens is that the physical laptop locks up. The keyboard, touchpad, wireless and bluetooth buttons, and the power button do not respond at all. I can plug a Usb mouse and keyboard and control the laptop from that. The operating system keeps working for a little while after but it will eventually become very slow and stop working. i can move the mouse but not open anything.

I originally had Vista on it but i recently reloaded it with XP and it still does it. I have looked in the event viewer and no entries are made at the time of the lockup.
It has locked up while i was playing call of duty 4 and halo 2 but it seems like it does it most while i am typing up papers in Microsoft Word 2007.
I have ran Microscope diagnostics on the hardware and it comes out with no errors. It is a Nobilis N5021. I have sent it back to them but they did not find any problems with it.
Also when i try to restart or turn it off from the OS after it locks up it gets stuck in the shut down process. I have let it run overnight but it doesnt finish. the only way i can get it to reset is by pulling the battery and power cord which i dont like doing! It will then boot up fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi

you should control the temperature
The cpu should be no more than 110F. it' s a security : it stops to work instead of overheat.  consider cleaning out the dust, cleaning the old thermal paste off the cpu and applying a new drop, and reseating the cpu in its socket and reseating the heatsink.  Make sure the ventilation in the case is ok also by ensuring good airflow from front to back.

ok thanks. i will try reseating it and reapplying thermal paste. i made sure it was clean and it was always on a hard surface with vents unobstructed.
Do you know of a way to monitor the CPU temp?

and the usb mouse keeps working after it stops and i can run stuff for at least a little while. If the processor was shutting down as a safetly would it do this?
Acronis in Gartner 2019 MQ for datacenter backup

It is an honor to be featured in Gartner 2019 Magic Quadrant for Datacenter Backup and Recovery Solutions. Gartner’s MQ sets a high standard and earning a place on their grid is a great affirmation that Acronis is delivering on our mission to protect all data, apps, and systems.

1 - take a look at that :

2 - it's a windows security, so you have only basic commands available.

ok thanks. i followed the link to the other question and i downloaded the trial for everest and installed some temperature monitors. It had a stress test feature so i ran that and it ran the CPU, mem, and everything at %100. I let it go for an hour and it did not lock up. It did get up to 72 degrees celcius which is 160 F although it averaged around 64. when it is just idling it is about 45 degree C average.

everytime it has locked up it does not feel hot. it has definately not been as hot as it was at 72 degrees C.

ok
I 've got a better feeling for hardware fault but if you can test it with a live cd , you 'll be sure it comes from windows or not. you can test hdd and ram with the live cd.

what is a live cd? is that a diagnostic program?
Thanks
Grant
a live cd is an OS that run on the cdrom. so you can test everything and check if the problem is windows related.
