Optical drives not responding

Ditch_Doctor used Ask the Experts™
I have a Sony PCV-RX550 desktop pc with a Pioneer dvd-rom #117r & a Sony cd-rw #crx175e optical drives.  Neither drive shows in "My Computer", and doesn't respond when a cd is inserted.  The drives show as secondary master and secondary slave in bios (and the cables are attached the same), and both drives are marked by a yellow exclamation point in device manager, but was unsuccessful in updating the drivers.  I tried the jumpers set to master/slave & both to CS, but neither made any difference.  I did try to run a linux program cd (slax) and it did load and run successfully (which was more confusing!).  I would appreciate any suggestions that you have to help resolve this device issue.  Thanks!

From within Windows Device Manager if the driver update function fails you generally have to go out and find the drivers from the manufacturer directly, then use the 'update driver' feature and point it to the location of the new drivers.

It sounds like you have it cabled properly and since Windows is recognizing the drives it just needs updated drivers to know how to use them.  When you booted from slax and all was well, it again points to a windows device driver issue.

I did try to update the pioneer driver by downloading it from the web, but the driver said the device could not be detected, and therefore could not be updated, and I had trouble locating the sony driver on the sony site.
This may or may not help detect your Sony drive:

Read through the notes and install if applicable.

Did you download the "Pioneer DVD-RW Drive Firmware Update Utility" from Sony's support website or did you find the installer you mentioned in your last post somewhere else?  (it looks like this particular installer is only for Pioneer DVR-103 and DVR-104 DVD-RW drives)

Do you have iTunes installed by any chance?

No, and it had sonicstage installed but I removed it.  I downloaded the sony cd-rw firmware update but that didn't help either.
I ended up reinstalling the O/S which took care of the problem.  Thanks for the suggestions.....
