Temporary profile on laptop. - home machine, not networked!

On starting up a Windows XP laptop, we get the following messages (repeated here in this order from Event Viewer)

"Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your administrator"

We then get a follow on message

"Windows has backed up this users profile. Windows will automatically try to use the backed up profile the next time this user logs on"

Then:

"Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off"

The laptop then loads up with the temporary profile, and items in My Docs, Favourites etc are unavailable, but still exist in another user folder called "zuuMedia".
We also need to recover the address book from Outlook 2003, as launching outlook in the temporary profile has no accounts or addresses.

Any help to rescue the contacts list first, then to restore the profile much appreciated!
David.

1) first run hardware diagnostics, Disk, RAm etc to resolve any issues there

2) backup the renmaed profiles since they do contain data, you may need to take ownership to do so

3) Create a new user profile, and copy the relevant portions that you need from the backed up profile

4) You should be able to export/ import the outlook data if needed

I hope this helps !
You should try System Restore to put the profile back to a state before you started having problems. When you do this, all profiles on the computer will be changed - not just the one your having problems with.

Worked perfectly with a system restore, never would have thought to try it!
Many thanks.
