i have about 100 pc's to install the activex crystal veiwer on and I have no idea where to start.  The stand alone executable might work but I was hoping to use the active x component.  On the cd, does anyone know what I should start with?  what's needed?   Nothing like waiting until the last minute to tell me they needed this....
Thanks ... Kaite

You can't install it from the Crystal CD.  You have to build an installation package for the application and install it.

Are you installing on theserver or the clients?

Commented:
Oh, I would be installing it on clients.  From what I've read it requires 4 or so dll's :
Crviewer.dll
- Crviewer9.dll
- Sviewhlp.dll
- Swebers.dll
But I have no idea where to find these dll's and or if anything else is needed.  I downloaded the viewer crystal reports 2008 viewer but this is a seperate piece of software and I would rather just install the activex so that they can view through the web browser.
When you say build an installation packager, are you talking about building an MSI or is there a way to script it?

Thanks... Katie V

You need much more than that. To install on a client build the installation package and include the merge modules.

Which edition of CR10 do you have?  The merge modules should be on the CD.

the viewer it says to use is crystal reports 2008, and its Business Objects Edge server product... I believe I need the active x viewer for crystal reports 11.. Modules, maybe that's on the edge server cd?

Sorry for the questions, i have no real knowlege of this product past version 9.
Thanks again....

i got the crystal reports viewer (the stand alone, client installer to work) but this won't work as we have our customer service application that they enter the customer information in and it generates the report in a seperate window... and they print or export from that window.  Says right in the URL "viewer=actix"...

ok, now im rambling..................

What viewer are you trying to use?

Did you buld an application with a viewer?

I didn't build an application.  I started with the download from here:  http://www.businessobjects.com/forms/crystalreports/viewer/

Then i followed these instructions:  (from a forum on appdeploy.com)
I passed the /qn to the extracted MSI.  The original compressed executable passed commands to a setup.exe in a temp folder upon uncompression.  If you run the original exe as "crveiwerxi.exe /a" it passes it to the temp folder setup.exe and runs an admin install, extracting the msi and files.

Once I had that, it prompts "please run from setup.exe in parent blah" error message when trying to run manually non-silent, or with /qb, and the standard Installshield tricks listed above did not work.  Running that extracted msi with /qn installed fine without the "please run from setup.exe in parent blah" message.

This worked for installing the actual viewer... but unfortunatly this won't work for us since we are using an in house web application that just calls the report and uses the "activex" veiwer.. but I haven't found this viewer anywhere and don't know where to start to complile an application or script to get it to work...

I appreciate all your help ..

I guess I should say the above worked for a silent install of the viewer through SMS-- and I need to do the same for the activex... :)

The ActiveX viewer requires an application to support it.  It isn't a standalone viewer.

Is this the standalone Crystal or the versionin VS

im sorry,  when you say version in VS ?

sorry for the question, in VS, meaning in Virtual Studio right?
we are just using a url to the crystal BO edge server so i'd have to answer stand alone crystal.

Are you using Crystal Reports Server?

Well, I finally found the files.  C:\Program Files\Business Objects\Common\4.0\crystalreportviewers12\ActiveXControls  on the Crystal (SAP/BO) edge server.  now i jus thave to figure out which dll's to register or find a way to install the cab files, which would be cleaner but I don't know of a way.  Attached is a print screen of that directory of files.. it actually has both the print control cab and the active x cab file... But I need to deploy these to many machines using sms... Thanks for your help, do you know which dll's need registered?

I don't.  There should be a set of Merge Modules that when installed will take care of that.

you don't know of a way to copy cab files over to the c:\windows\downloaded program files directory and have them actually work do you?  Looks like im going to be stuck copying the dll's and registering them.
Thanks for all your help.
