Challenging No sound issue in xp sp3
I am running winxp sp3 on toshiba tecra A3.
problem: Sounds and audio devices in control panel-->sounds and audio devices PROPERTIES shows NO sound.
Why i am puzzled:
1)Played around with various incarnations of drivers...install/uninstal l etc.
2) No problems in device manger. All relevant drivers loaded.
3) NOT a hardware issue.
4) windows audio service running.
Some light:
1) If i disable realtek ac97 audio and remove all the hidden devices ( like MS kernal acoustic...audio splitter etc...) then reboot and then enable it again, i get sound. If i reboot again i have the no sound issue again.
Possible culprit:
I was wondering if installing kaspersky internet suite is responsible, after it froze my mouse and stopped my usb ports from working- device error code 39 in device manager. This was resolved by removing the upper filters entry in the registry for these devices.
Many thanks for some suggestions.
Gold.

Hey Gold, I am actually posting from an older Toshiba laptop and I know they can have lots of drivers issues. My best advice would be to spend a good deal of time on the Toshiba website to look for the specific drivers. It took me forever to find the drivers for mine, and I couldn't pull them from anywhere else including Microsoft Update.

Been there done that!
Have you checked your event viewer?
ASKER
No problems flaged in the event viewer relating to sound. It's really puzzling.
Have you tried disabling everything at startup via msconfig? May also under services select hide all microsoft ones and then disable all the remaining ones. If it works then you should be able to isolate to the one causing problem at startup.
ASKER
Have tried that as well! Thanks.
