Why Can't I Boot From CD or DVD?

Hi Expert(s)

In the Boot Sequence I have set CDROM as the First Boot Device. In the BIOS I have AHCI enabled. Everytime I try to boot from either CD or DVD with AHCI enabled it will NOT boot, (the discs that I'm trying to boot from are bootable) and will continue to load into Windows. However, If I go into the BIOS and change it from AHCI to IDE Mode, I get press any key to boot from cd or dvd, once I press any key the discs boot just fine.

Thanks!

Seems like your CD/DVD Drive does not support AHDC (SATA), some require the BIOS to be set as IDE.

You could double check your actual drive and see what cable are you connecting to it. If it's a wide gray cable then it's IDE, if it's a thin small black one then it's sata. If it's IDE then you cannot use AHDC.

I appreciate everyone who participated so far in the question that I asked.

willcomp - I went though the manual and I really couldn't find anything that explains if any of the SATA channels could be selected as RAID/AHCI or IDE mode separately. And the same goes for if the SATA channels are reserved for IDE mode (optical drives). I found the manual to my mobo in a .pdf format. Would you want me to post the .pdf mobo manual if this would help any?
Sorry I haven't responded sooner. I did look at mobo manual a couple days ago and what you found is correct -- no individual settings or reserved connections.

Bottom line appears to be that you need to select IDE mode to boot from optical drives. It's not that big a performance/features hit unless you need hot swap capability.
One other option is to install IDE optical drives -- mobo has an IDE controller -- instead of SATA optical drives.
ddiazp - Here's the actual BIOS information:

BIOS Version: P35-W627DHG-
6A79OA1BC-14.

Flash Rom Type:
WINBOND 39V080F/3.3V

BIOS Date:
09/06/2007

willcomp - I have figured out how to boot from CD or DVD with AHCI enabled. I went into the BIOS, on First Boot Device --> I had selected "SATA CDROM" NOT my actual optical drive, I guess a "Generic" was selected.

Once I selected the correct optical drive, I tried boot from CD and DVD they both work, however, if I boot WITHOUT a CD or DVD, just right before Windows startsup I get the following "Verifying DMI Pool Data.......... Boot From AHCI CD-ROM:" and then it boots into Windows just fine. If I boot WITH a CD, or DVD I get the following "Verifying DMI Pool Data.......... Boot From AHCI CD-ROM: 1. NO EMULATION System Type- 00" but I can still boot from CD or DVD just fine.

Here's two pictures.

Please note that I used Acronis Recovery CD for an example,
but I get the following "Verifying DMI Pool Data.......... Boot From AHCI CD-ROM: 1. NO EMULATION System Type- 00" with every bootable CD or DVD.

My question is do you know or anybody know why I get the following:
"1. NO EMULATION System Type- 00" when I boot with any CD or DVD, but I DON'T get this when I have no CD or DVD inserted?

Thanks,

Hi rindi,

Thank you for your comment.

The first picture I posted that says "Boot From AHCI CD-ROM :" didn't have any CD or DVD in the optical drive, it was going to boot into Windows.
However, when I booted from the Acronis Rescue Media, I get
"1. NO EMULATION System Type- 00"
I also get that when I boot from a OS installation disc, such as Windows XP, or Windows 7 release candidate.
It's interesting you bring up "floppy" when I was installing BootIt Next Generation, I cought something, instead of saying "1. NO EMULATION System Type- 00" It said
"1. FD 1.44MB System Type- 00"
Bootit EMBRL 2.04
Please Wait...
Im assuming that "FD" is meaning Floppy Disk or Floppy Drive.
I have downloaded and installed CDBurnerXP,
I have always used Nero to burn bootable CD's and DVD's, would it be better to use CDBurnerXP instead of Nero, or is it all about the same?
No matter what burning software I use, Nero, CDBurnerXP ect, I am still going to get either the following correct?
<Within the emulation type selection you have different choices like floppy 1.20, floppy 1.44, floppy 2.88, Hard Disc and No emulation.>
"System Type- 00" is normal correct?
Overall is everything correct? Is all of this completely normal?
Thanks,

I use CDBurnerXP because it is free. Nero is good too, but apart from it being commercial, it is very bloated with things I normally don't need. But if I were going to use a commercial product, then I'd go for Nero. And yes, you should get all those options in other burning tools as well, if they support making bootable CD's.

I'm sorry, I believe you answered my question in my last comment, but I think I'm just reading it wrong.

Thank you for explaining to me about CDBurnerXP and Nero.

My other question(s) is...

No matter what burning software I use, Nero, CDBurnerXP ect, I am still going to get either the following correct?
<Within the emulation type selection you have different choices like floppy 1.20, floppy 1.44, floppy 2.88, Hard Disc and No emulation.>
I believe your answer is or was...
<And yes, you should get all those options in other burning tools as well, if they support making bootable CD's>
If that's not correct please correct me.
And my other two questions are...
Is "System Type- 00" is normal correct?
Overall is everything correct? Is all of this completely normal?
Yes you understood me correct and everything is correct and normal, also the type 00.
Thanks rindi! :-)
Even though I found the solution to the original question on my own, I'm still going to reward points. Thanks again who participated.
