What cell-phone service provides server-side data-storage?
I have been using a prepaid cell-phone for a long time. Right now I am getting a Family Plan that is not prepaid, but is a 2-year contractual setup with Verizon or possibly some other service, but most likely Verizon.
One feature I am looking for and I don't know if it exists is the following: I am looking for a system where phone-numbers can be stored on a server opposed to being stored on the phone. This way if a phone is lost, someone else will not come across our phone-numbers and we won't have to add them in again to the new phones, if they get lost. My thought is that it would be a website that is password-protected. So that if someone finds the phone and tries to access our phone-numbers they won't be able to because we'll be able to change the password via the Web. What I'm saying is that all of our data: phone-numbers, messages, emails and/or other data will be all server-side opposed to in the phone. This way if we lose a phone or something else happens to it, it's no problem with regard to data. All I'll need is a new phone.
Is there a company that offers such a service or something close to it? Verizon provides the Chaperone service that is good for keeping track of kids (which I need), which will also be good for locating a missing phone, if it's on. They also have a lock for the phonebook, which is good. But I really like my thought above and if it exists, I'd like to know. So which company or companies have something like I'm describing?
Thanks!!

Lee, you are awesome!!! That's exactly what I want!! I just hope that it's not too costly!! Last question: do you know which companies offer the service you are describing and/or where the rate is reasonable???
ASKER
Actually, I have one more set of questions: if it's server-side then why would you need to wipe it? What exactly would I be wiping if all data are located on the server? What if the phone is off when the wipe is attempted? What if the wipe isn't completed before someone gets on the phone and tries to view your data, assuming the password-protection was off or it was cracked?
Thanks!!!!
Thanks!!!!
Sprint offers wireless backup, restore and remote wipe services for their Palm Pre using Palm Profile web service.

leew, I understand. That all makes sense. I have some follow-ups.
I want to understand the remote wipe service better. If I lose my phone and someone finds it and turns it on, but it is password-protected and he can't get in, will the wipe work with it on and not being logged-in? Will the wipe work if the phone is off or out-of-range? What happens in those scenarios?
Thanks so much!!!

Okay Lee, those are all the questions I have for now. I am going to shop around with the hope of finding this solution at a reasonable rate. Thanks for all the info!!
Late to the question, I know, but Verizon offers a backup application that is FREE for Verizon users. It backs up all your contacts to their system, where you can also download, upload, and modify contacts, then transmit them to the phone. https://backupassistant.vz w.com/mb/? skininfo=1 10 It also runs on a daily backup schedule, so you can set it up and forget about it.

LHerrou, it was still helpful. Just in case the business solutions are too expensive I am going with the Chaperone service via the Residential Plan, which will help me keep track of my kid and also keep track of the phone if it's lost. And I'll be able to recover the data if the phone is lost using the info you gave me. At this point, all I need is a solution to remotely delete the data just in case the business solution doesn't work out. Thanks!!!

My hope is that leew is available to answer these questions or someone that knows this stuff just as well.
I did a little research and I like the features of Windows Mobile Smart Phones using MS-Exchange, namely ActiveSync and Remote Wipe, etc. I have some more questions.
I was told that a "hosted exchange" email-provider can synch the following data w/my Windows Mobile phone: contacts, e-mail, tasks, and calendar. But what about the messages I get via messaging? Is it possible to synch the messages too?
Next, I have quite a bit of IT experience with regard to programming/development and I have some (not as much as programming etc.) experience with networking and server management. Is it technically possible to setup a licensed MS-Exchange Server at my house with a cable-modem setup? My goal would be to utilize ActiveSync and Remote Wipe via Exchange with my cell-phones. Is that possible? Is it possible to bypass a hosted Exchange provider to exploit these features?
How would the data flow from source to target if I were to host an Exchange-Server in my house with regard to cell-phone data-flow?
How would the data flow from source to target if I were to subscribe to a hosted Exchange provider with regard to cell-phone data-flow?
If a Windows Mobile Smart Phone operating System has updates by Microsoft, do those updates come with a cost?
I also just learned that Blackberries have the Remote Wipe feature:
http://docs.blackberry.com/en/admin/deliverables/4222/Remote_Wipe_Reset_to_Factory_Defaults_250402_11.jsp
I also just learned that you get updates for the life of the device via Blackberry, 100% free. That's what I was told anyway.
Thanks so much!!!

Sounds like it's time to open a new question.

Yes I did that. I wasn't sure whether to post here or new, so I did both. I will know for next time.
In the future, you can set up the new question, then post a link.
