AOL How do I FTP and access AOL web space?

Hi
I'd like to ftp files to my AOL web space.
Reading other EE posts,
they say to use an ftp program and have
username - 'Anonymous'
password - AOL email address.
I have FileZilla

I initially thought - There is no way a major co. like AOL would have such a giant security hole like that? (email addr is pw)
 It doesnt work.
Ten years ago, when I did this, it seemed simple. It doesnt seem to be in the AOL menu.
Surely there is FTP in the AOL app itself?
What will my URL be for the files?
Help.

Apparently, since you have to log into AOL using your username and password, AOL has configured its browser such that the AOL FTP component of the browser already knows your login information and therefore doesn't need it.

To use some other FTP client, try this:

Domain: ftp.hometown.aol.com
Login: your username
Password: your password

See http://www.davidsj.com/post.php?id=213_0_1_0_C for more. Note that he says that as of December 2008, the system might not be available for very long.

BurtAnderson,

Thanks for chiming in. I couldn't find anything really current that referred to an AOL FTP component, but I don't use AOL, so I was just reading things and came up with the best solution I could.

If you do use AOL, are the instructions I posted even close to what the Asker should do?

Thanks!

I don't really use AOL either, one of the owners of my company does and I troubleshoot things from time to time.

Your advice looks fine for connecting to FTP generally, but AOL has a habit of doing things their own way, so I can't really say if it would work with their service.

In your earlier post, you stated "Note that he says that as of December 2008, the system might not be available for very long." That's what got me thinking that we might be talking about the XDrive service that they canceled. If that system used standard FTP, they hid the process behind their interface.
That's kind of what I thought based on everything I could find.

Personally, I use WS-FTP, which has a very clean interface for entering the data. From what I could tell, when one logs into AOL, the browser remembers who you are and what your password is, so when you want to upload to your folder, all it needs is the information about where to put it, and the default folder is your username.

So it would be reasonable that it is the path I posted... except that we're talking about AOL, and they're anything but reasonable about some things.

Hehe. AOL has that reputation. I use WS-FTP as well, but an older version. It's not the type of program I see a need to upgrade very often. I mean, it's FTP. It is what it is, it does what it does. There are only so many new features they can pack on until it's MS Word.

Or Vista...
