Outlook 2003 Find feature stopped working

We are running Exchange 2000 with Outlook 2003 clients running on XP SP3. We do not have full-text indexing turned on on the Exchange server; never have to my knowledge. We recently discovered that the Find feature in Outlook no longer works. It works on local mailbox files (.pst, .ost), but not 'online' mailboxes. I haven't found much on this issue that didn't have to do with Vista or some other scenario we aren't doing. Any ideas?

Check this MS KB and see if it applies to you.

I've seen that. It does not apply to us. We have been on XP SP3 for some time but this issue just recently cropped up. Also, the KB article notes that the issue doesn't occur with Outlook 2003 which is what we are using. Thanks.
Are you sure it is happening for all users?
If yes are you getting any related events in exchange server.
Does advanced find work for users?
Do you have latest SP for outlook 2003 clients?

We have not checked all users but everyone that we have checked that is not running in cached exchange mode is not working, either with the quick find or advanced find. I myself have created a new folder, put three messages in it with very specific subject lines and run a search on that folder for the exact subject text and it will search for hours and find nothing.
We initially thought that the Microsoft Search service may have crapped out on the exchange server it was running, we stopped and restarted it and that had no effect. We have not rebooted the exchange server yet because that needs to be scheduled, but I will probably try that this weekend.
We are running the latest SP and patches on the Outlook clients. Nothing has really changed much recently, although there have certainly been workstation patches installed since it was working.
