Best Practices with Hard Coding Switches and Server NICs to 1000/Full on GB Ethernet

Our office has been instructed to hard code both our switches and server NICs to either 100/Full or 1000/Full, (obviously depending on the switch they're connecting to).  What are best practices re: the GB settings?  I can understand the 100/Full for the servers on the 10/100 switches but I always understood that it was best to allow the Gig E server NICs to auto-negotiate with the switch ports.  Is that no longer the case?
