Yellow Shield in bottom right "Updates are ready for your computer" - legit and real?

Is a yellow shield in the bottom right display area (system tray?) a genuine Microsoft alert?
I don't know whether to let this thing install updates or not.
If it is real, I could go to the Microsoft website and look for updates, right?
Should I do that?

This shield appeared last night when I was turning of the computer. I did not let it do the updates. This morning after power up there is no shield.

Is "shutdown and install updates" a clickable option somewhere?
I first saw the "updates are ready - do you want to install" message when I was shutting down last night. Does the fact that it appeared during the shutdown process mean it was safe?
I'm wondering why the shield isn't there this morning.
Oh, I get it now. I have automatic updates set for 3:00 AM. Lately I have been shutting down the computer at night because I got a virus last week. So these updates have been coming all along . I used to  see a message in the morning that I had gotten updates and I didn't question it, but I got a virus last week and now I am paranoid.
My questions are resolved, but I did need both answers .
Thank you very much.
emiops, I did get that yellow shield virus recently and it was a big pain. That's why I'm once-burned now.  I had thought I was adequately protected between my wireless-G router and McAffee. The virus doctors removed McAffee and left me with Avast and I'm always afraid now.

You can do the Shutdown and install updates as follows.

Start - shutdown

If updates are ready for installation you should see an option for shutdown and install updates.  Depending on the version of OS you have the GUI can look a little different.

Otherwise trust update.microsoft.com

On a side note, you can look to see all the system tray icons.  If you see 2 icons showing yellow shields then there is a good chance you have a program trying to mimic windows updates.

Right click on your task bar and select properties.  Then select Customize.

This will give you a list of all past and current system tray icons.  If you see the windows update icon in both the Past and Current icons, then you have an imposter some where.
