In Firefox, I can type "about:config" in the address bar, then change image.animation_mode to "none". That stills all animated gifs.

That and the Flashblock extension are the only two things I care about in Firefox, because I don't want to see any movement in web pages unless I specifically ask for it. Surfing is much nicer that way!

I guess Chrome is too new and undeveloped to have such a feature. Give it time though, it'll eventually come. As for customisation options in Chrome, they're pretty limited right about now.
