Firefox does not allow me to stay signed in at my Gmail account

My problem is I would like to stay signed in to my Gmail account while using Firefox. I can do this with IE8 & Safari but not FF.

I am using Firefox 3.011 on a vista 64 machine

Remember cookies options is set to yes.  I am not clearing cookies upon exit.  Also, cookies is deselected in the clear private data menu. I am not clearing authenticated sections.  I have keep until they expire with cookies.

It remembers my username, password and the fact I have ticked the stay signed in button.

It asks me if I want to remember this password? I say Remember, but every time it asks me again. When I go to the place where it stores the remembered passwords for websites it is empty.

Security programs installed AVG AV.  No anti spyware program is enabled.

My enabled extensions are: AI toolbar, All in one sidebar, avg safe search. Better Gmail 2, better greader, Canadian English, customize google, download, evernote web clipper, fireftp, fireshot, Free download manager, Gmail manager, gmailagenda, google gears, google notebook, google toolbar, google enhancer, goglepedia, greasemonkey, hyperwords, i.e. Tab, logmein, Mr. Tech, save images, split browser, tiny menu, tree style, xmarks

I moved the cookies.txt file out of the profile folder. I re launched Firefox but it did not regenerated the file.

I was hoping I would not have to upgrade to 3.5.2 since not all my add ones work with the latest version.
I am attempting to delete all traces of Mozilla but it is telling me I need permission to perform this action.
Disable all extensions and see if you experience the same problem. If you don't then, enable them one-by-one to see which specific extension is causing the problem.

I have disabled all the extensions. It continues to prevent me from staying signed in.
Do you have Skype plugin installed by any chance? If you do, please uninstall the plugin from Firefox and try again and let us know how it goes.

I've seen a couple of applications in office that weren't working properly when Skype Mastermind addin was activated and as soon as it was removed, they were completely normal again.
I don't have the Skype plug in. however, I went ahead and disabled all my plug ins anyway and I still have the same problem.
Check the privacy options within Firefox then. If its not the addons, it must be a setting within Firefox that is affecting the browser.

Is the option  'Clear history after x days' disabled?

So I launched FF in safe mode and reset all the boxes back to their default settings. (This enables the "clear after x days" box. Then I launched it again. Set my home page to my GMAIL account. Asked it to Stay Logged In. Closed the browser. Then I re launched it and it gives me the Gmail page where I can sign in with the forms already filled out and the Stay Logged in box ticked, but it did not stay logged in.
BTW, I did log into GMAIL after checking the Stay logged in box.
I have another suggestion for you, try logging into the secure gmail site by going to:

https://www.gmail.com

Try this and let me know, if you are still getting signed out.
Thanks all! I have not been able to get FF 3.011 working as I wanted to, so I have uninstalled it and deleted all my personal preferences and installed the new version, then upgraded all my add on's. I am accepting the first solution.
I'd like to have been able to avoid the full re install but sometimes you just can't get around it.
