Terminal Services Roaming Profile Error
I have a Windows 2003 Server SP2 Standard Edition running Terminal Services. I have one user that is occasionally unable to load their profile. The following errors are logged in the event log:
Event ID: 1509
Windows cannot copy file \\#####\profile$\####\NTUS ER.DAT to location C:\Documents and Settings\#####\NTUSER.DAT. Possible causes of this error include network problems or insufficient security rights. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.
DETAIL - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
Event ID: 1515
Windows has backed up this user's profile. Windows will automatically try to use the backed up profile the next time this user logs on.
Event ID: 1511
Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.
As mentioned above this only happens occasionally (but often enough that the user is becoming increasingly frustrated) and is only effecting one user.
Please let me know if I should provide anymore information.

Hi,
We only have one application server so the user is definitely not logging on or off different servers at the same time. I dont believe that we have a policy that unloads any profiles from servers but do you know where I would look for that?
Thanks
Tim

At first please check out, if you are using roaming profiles. You can find out by checking
control panel -> system -> advanced -> settings
The type of your ordinary users profile, should say "roaming" if you are using roaming profiles.
If you don't the type says "local".
If you use Active Directory and have make use of Group Policies
you should check out if you have enabled the "delete cached copies of roaming profiles"-policy.

If you do use that policy, it would be a good idea to install the "Microsoft User Profile Hive Cleanup Service" mentioned earlier.

Hi,
We are definitely using roaming profiles but the group policy delete cached copies of roaming profiles is currently not enabled. I assume this means that the server should be storing a copy of the user profile on the server?
Thanks

This solution is only available to members.
To access this solution, you must be a member of Experts Exchange.
It is very important to log off and let the profile make a full sync, before logging on to another server.
Have you enabled a policy, where the profile on the server is unloaded, when the users logs off.
In case you have that, have you installed the Microsoft User Profile Hive Cleanup Service
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?FamilyID=1b286e6d-8912-4e18-b570-42470e2f3582&displaylang=en
This service should be fixing problems, when unloading the profile, eventually avoiding future problems with loading the profile again.
