Remote Desktop Delete key acts like Ctrl+Alt+Del

Hello Everyone!
I have a client thats using Remote Desktop. While in the Remote Desktop screen if she presses the Period or Delete key it acts like she did a ctrl+alt+delete and puts up the Windows Security window on the Remote Desktop screen. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Both computers are running Windows XP.

CTRL+ALT+END is the key combo to invoke that on the remote machine, I dont see how the delete key (or . on the keypas with numlock off) can invoke this.

Are you sure it's the REMOTE PC's security window?

Hello Bongogeorge,

Also, in addition to what Jerkson said, you might want to have to user do the following.

--Go to "Start/All Programs/Accessories"
--Right-Click on the "Remote Desktop Connection" and go to "Properties"
--Now click on the "Shortcut Tab" and find where it says "Shortcut Key"
--Make sure that the word "None" is typed there, and not a "." or "Del"

Hope this helps,

Justin
Good point Justin.

mrroonie: RightAlt + Del does nothing, either locally or in RDP.
The . key also happens to be DEL on the keypad.
i think you'll find it does if you try it jerkson
it doesn't locally no, but it does on RDP
negative I tried it before posting.
well it does on every pc i've ever remoted into so you must have some special keyboard. unless you've left num lock on while trying it....?
Nope. RDP from winXP to vista and it doesnt work. Tried WinXP to WinXP and no go either. Numlock off, also tried both delete's.

Lets just agree to disagree and continue on the topic at hand

Hello!
Thankyou for your answers.
Jerkson: I'm positive it's the Remote PC's security window.
justinmoore14: The Short Cut Key does say None.
mrroonie: Right Alt + Delete works in a Virtual PC console but I can't get it to work with Remote Desktop. You may be on to something with the keyboard. I rapidly tapped the Right Alt key and the problem went away but it doesn't make sense that the Right Alt and End would be sticking because then the user wouldn't be able to type into Microsoft Word.

This problem has happened the past couple mornings so I'm going to see if it happens again tomorrow.
If anyone has another idea please let me know.

Bongogeorge, glad you got it resolved.

Justin
same problem here.

From Win XP 64 SP2 running remote desktop to a Vista x64 Business SP2 machine, the delete key whether it be the one on the number pad causes the CTRL-ALT-DEL (Vista) light-blue screen to show up on the remote end (with the "Lock this computer", "log off", "change password" ,"task manager", etc. buttons showing up).

This seems to only happen on occasion.  The solution, I've found is to press CTRL-ALT-DEL on the local machine (while the Remote session is still active), then hit cancel (the keyboard "resets" ).  This usually fixes the "remote desktop Caps-Lock inversion" problem (this is where you're remote machine acts as if it has the CAPS-LOCK key on -when it does not in  reality - but typing lower case letters on the local machine yields uppercase on the remote)

FYI: This is a repeatable bug in the latest remote desktop client software (not your keyboard), trust me :)
Bd9000,

Unfortunately, I do not have a Vista machine that I can remote into to try to duplicate your problem, so I would say the following.

First, did you see my post above "25403547", and try that.

Second, since this question is already closed, generally speaking the only Experts who may come back and look at your post are the ones who participated in this question. With that being said, I would recommend you start a new question, and will probably have better success at getting help from more Experts.

Last, There is currently another question open that may help you, although the author has not come back to the question yet. You could have a look at it if you wish.
