Since you are doing a cold install, have you verified that it ISN'T a driver problem by attempting at least a partial install of XP, or another O/S? Since you have a single disk drive, why not disable the RAID mode to begin with? (Only reason not to is if you plan on mirroring the disk later on)

good suggestion dlethe, thx.
Drive is detected correctly by bios. ST380013AS, seagate barracuda 7200.7
Installed known good drive (WD raptor) with XP installed, boots fine to XP.
Run win7 setup from dvd same with known good drive (wd raptor), drive is detected.
Installed new seagate 1.5TB drive, Win7 installing normally.
seems strange, but older seagate drive must not be compat with precision 490 or win7.
