How I can restore my ras connections for my profile in windows 7?
Hi Buddies,
I have a dell inspiron 6400 laptop with windows 7 unltimate x86 installed on it. I got a problem with my ras connections which came from my previous windows vista using USMT.
A few days ago, when I want to take an image from a DVD using Nero, my laptop hangs in the middle of job, so I necessarily shut my laptop down. I started it again and it was go to login dialog normally, I entered my password and it was go to load my desktop, but a new desktop!!!! It was reset my profile to default profile!!!! I don't know why, but this was a big problem. All of my settings, documents and software settings was lost.
I examined Administrator account and there is no problem for that account, all things were OK.
I spent some days to restore my settings, documents and softwares` settings, but still I have a problem, I lose all of my ras connections when I using my account. but they are available using Administrator account !!!!
I find my phonebook file at this address "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\ Network\Co nnections\ Pbk\raspho ne.pbk"
It contains all of my lost ras connections ! I can use it to dial and connect to all of those connections. but the Windows itself can'nt use it. It can not list my connections when I click on network icon on traybar ! Interesting part of the problem is that when I want to open my phonebook from above address, Windows gives me an error like this:
-------------------------- -
Network Connections
-------------------------- -
Cannot load phonebook.
Error 621: The system could not open the phone book file.
-------------------------- -
OK
-------------------------- -
But, if I take a copy of my phonebook to another location, It opens normally and I can use it !!!
Also I have following error in Application section of events log:
-------------------------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- --
Windows cannot load classes registry file.
DETAIL - The system cannot find the file specified.

I used REGEDIT and I could load user classes registry file which located in
"C:\Users\[my user name]\AppData\Local\Micros oft\Window s\UsrClass .dat"
without any error, also I can change it
I don't understand what above event want to say??!?!?!
When I want to create a new connection for only my user account, the New Connection wizard gives me an error message like this: "The wizard can not create connection" and there is no matter what type of connection you want to create, Dialup, VPN or PPPoE.
But if I select to create a connection for all users, it gives me another error message like this: "Connection failed with error 621, System could not open the phone book file" !!!
I checked phonebook file permissions to have appropriate permissions and I don't think that my problem arise from permissions.
these are permissions that assigned to my phonebook file:
-------------------------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---
c:\programdata\microsoft\n etwork\con nections\p bk\rasphon e.pbk
NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM:(ID)F
BUILTIN\Administrators:(ID )F

FILE_APPEND_DATA
FILE_READ_EA

-------------------------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---
I should say that I used to search microsoft and Technet websites and also googled my problem but still I can't find a solution fot it.
I think that my problem might be from curropted registry enteries, specially user related enteries.
I am looking forward for a cool tool that able to check windows registry integrity and find inconsistencies of it. I know that there are tons of registry cleaners and fixers, but non of them has the ability to find registry corruptness. I expect that microsoft has a standard tool to check windows registry integrity and consistency.
What do you think about this situation?
Please help me to solve this problem.
Thanks in advanced.

Hi merete,
I am checking all of my dicsc by chkdsk /f every week. I don't think that this problem routed in disc problems!! also I have checked C drive using HDD Regenerator to find and repair any bad sector if exists, but It didn't find bad sector on my C drive.
Also KISS method doesn't worked for me. It is really complicated problem.
Device manager doesn't show any error, question mark or diabled device. all of my network services are healthy except network connections.
one thing that I discovered since last week is the windows doesn't show any Printers or USB devices in "Printers and Devices" window!!! so I can't remove USB deivces safely! because they aren't listed in this window!!!
Can you help me to find Blue From connection software, I don't know what is this and how can I use it!
I have special thanks about those two links.
I found "http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825826" in your second link that was so helpful. but unfortunately non of them helped me to overcome this problem.
The only happened change since asking this question is that some of my connection appeared when I use group policy editor to update user policies about internet explorer connections at this address:
User Configuration->Windows Settings->Internet Explorer Maintenance->Connection->C onnection Settings.
But they appeared so shortly, They would lost by refreshing Network Connections window!!!!
Thanks in advanced,
I am still seeking for solution.

check the windows errors in events logs see if they can help you find a problem.
refs and extrat>Execute the following from elevated command prompt on both computer(the one works and the one fails).
1. Run netsh ras set tr * en (without quotes). This enables logging.
2. Recreate the issue.
3. Run netsh ras set tr * di (without quotes). This disables logging.

Dear Merete,
Thanks a lot for your kind helps. Actually I found an article last night that recommended a way to repair corrupted profile and interestingly it is so close to your last post. here you can find it's link:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/itprovistanetworking/thread/224b3033-5360-4c92-9001-78c19b9dd823
I was going through steps mentioned in that article and it enabled me to recover all of my connections. also my printer and devices are healthy now :)
Those steps are as follow:
-------------------------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- -
1. Log onto the system with an administrator account.
2. Go into %systemdrive%\users\
3. Rename the folder named as <problematic account name> to <problematic account name> (old).
4. Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe)
5. Export to backup the registry key: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Wi ndows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileL ist
6. Then, expand the ProfileList and delete the key which the Data of ProfileImagePath is C:\users\<problematic account name>
7. Log off and try to logon with the problematic account.
-------------------------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- -
Now I have special thanks to you for your kind and efficient helps. I accept your last solution as Accepted Solution.
Kind Regards

I noted how many partitions you have or that external HDD?
If one of these is in trouble you may lose boot
run a chkdsk on all drives
6 discs maybe a drain on the system power resources.
How big is your power supply unit?
but that being said one main problem can cause a snowball effect and fixing the main problem may cause the others to wake up again.
use the KISS method keep it simple science
Have you tried system restore?
Create a new user account with the same name or similar/
Look in device manager for problem devices or duplicates with errors yellow question marks
refs to> Error #621 this a dial up error not on dsl? using a modem?
Error Message: Cannot open the phone book file.
Solution: Install Blue Frog connection software again.
