Recovering Data from a failed hard drive

What is the best way to recover data from a failed hard drive? I think the problem is either a boot sector virus or a driver error ever 3 minutes or so It blue screens with the stop: 0x0000007B error. I'm either going to try to hook the drive up as a slave drive in my pc and copy the files that way, or use a bootable linux and try and copy them to an external hardrive that way. Are there any good software options I could try instead? What is the best most efficient way to recover data from a failed hard drive, in my case and generally speaking?
