SQL 2005 recovery question, i have mdf & ldf, within Microsoft Dynamics RMS, how can i make the Store Operations Administrator recognize these old files?

Hello,

I had a Microsoft Dynamics Retail Management System, Store Operations, application crash due to faulty hard drive. Customer has a .bck but it was done in June 09.  I have reinstalled Store Operations to a new hard disk and my system can attach to it's demo files.

I tried stopping the server service and copying over the MDF and LDF from the old DATA directory and placing it in the new.  but the system doesn't recognize it as it wasnt generated from the same sql server installation.  Is there a way to have it be recognized?

I've been reading the older posts and it looks like it can be done through command line.
i'm new to sql so please give me reply as if talking to a baby. e.g. open cmd prompt, etc.

Can i rename the old.mdf to old.bck?

thanks!

SSMS? I'm unsure about what that is?

I have these areas to config:

SQL Server Configuration Manager

And Microsoft Retail Management System, Store Operations Administrator. Which is basically the front end GUI where i can connect, select, create, & restore the database to which Store Operations Manager and Store POS run.

Within Store Operations Manager, i can't manipulate that old data.mdf. i can however restore the June backup.bck, which i did and it works fine with the older info.
SSMS  - SQL Server Management Studio.
thanks i will download that now and try to recover.
